Ream announced his decision on Tuesday ahead of the United States' friendly against Chile in his hometown of St Louis, Missouri. The announcement brings an end to one of the longest international careers among the current generation of American players.

The 38-year-old defender made his United States debut in November 2010 and went on to represent his country across more than a decade and a half of international football.

During his career, Ream became an important senior figure within the national team, eventually taking on the role of captain. He wore the captain's armband 26 times, including four matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Ream captained the United States during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which was hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico. The American team reached the round of 16 before its campaign ended with a defeat by Belgium.

His retirement announcement came shortly before the United States faced Chile in St Louis. The Americans went on to win that friendly 4-2, giving Ream an international occasion in his home city as he prepared to step away from the national team.

Ream's international career included two CONCACAF Nations League titles, adding major silverware to his long list of appearances for the United States.

The defender has also enjoyed an extensive club career. He previously played for Fulham and Bolton Wanderers in England and currently represents Charlotte FC in Major League Soccer.

His experience in both English and American football made him a long-serving presence within the United States setup.

Speaking about his decision, Ream said that he was proud to have been part of the national team for 16 years but believed the time had come to step away from international football.

The veteran defender also spoke about the younger generation coming through the American system and the development of players who could take on greater responsibilities in the future.

The United States now enters a new stage following the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup. Ream's retirement means the national team will have to develop new leadership within a squad that includes several younger players.

The transition comes as the United States continues its international programme with further fixtures following the Chile match.

The Americans are scheduled to face Mexico in Glendale, Arizona, on 3 October, before hosting Canada in St Paul, Minnesota, on 6 October.

Ream's departure therefore comes at the beginning of another international cycle, with the United States expected to continue developing its younger players while maintaining experienced leadership within the squad.

His 86 caps place him among the most experienced players in American men's international football. Only a small number of US players have accumulated more appearances after reaching the later stages of their careers.

His international journey began in 2010 and continued through several different generations of the national team, ultimately ending after he represented the United States at a World Cup hosted on home soil.

For Ream, the decision closes a significant chapter of his career while allowing a new generation of American defenders and leaders to emerge within the national team.

He is expected to continue playing club football with Charlotte FC, meaning his retirement applies specifically to international football rather than his professional playing career.
