Spain Fails to Rally EU Support for Suspension of Israel Trade Pact Amid Deep Internal Divides

Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares faced a diplomatic setback in Brussels during a high-stakes meeting of EU foreign ministers. Despite Spain’s vocal push to suspend the EU-Israel Association Agreement over concerns regarding humanitarian issues and settlement expansion, the proposal failed to garner the necessary support from other member states. While Ireland supported Madrid's stance, heavyweights like Germany and Italy blocked the move, arguing that maintaining trade channels is essential for ongoing diplomatic efforts.

Albares emphasized that "Europe's credibility is at stake" if it fails to act on its human rights clauses. However, EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas confirmed that while the discussion will continue, the consensus required for suspension remains absent. This outcome highlights a growing fragmentation within the European Union regarding its role in Middle Eastern conflicts, leaving Spain to lead a vocal but minority faction advocating for direct economic consequences.
