New Neuroproteomics Facility Opens New Frontiers in Neurodegeneration Research

The National NeuroProteomics Infrastructure Facility at Macquarie University has been developed to support research into motor neuron disease and other neurodegenerative conditions. The facility provides advanced proteomics measurement and analysis capabilities, allowing scientists to study proteins involved in neurological diseases in greater detail.

Neuroproteomics is becoming increasingly important because many neurodegenerative diseases involve abnormal changes in proteins. By examining these proteins, researchers can investigate how neurological cells become damaged and why certain disease processes develop and progress.

Macquarie University researchers are particularly focused on motor neuron disease, commonly known as MND and also associated with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS. Their work examines changes in proteins that may contribute to the deterioration and eventual loss of motor neurons.

One important area of research involves TDP-43, a protein associated with abnormal protein accumulation in MND. Researchers at Macquarie University say that in more than 97% of people with MND, TDP-43 moves outside the cell nucleus and forms clusters. Scientists are investigating how this abnormal behavior affects cellular processes and contributes to motor neuron damage.

The new research infrastructure is intended to give scientists access to sophisticated technologies for analyzing proteins on a much larger scale. Such capabilities can help researchers identify patterns that may not be visible through conventional laboratory methods.

Researchers hope that a deeper understanding of protein changes could eventually lead to the identification of new biomarkers. Biomarkers can help scientists detect disease-related biological changes and may eventually contribute to earlier diagnosis or improved monitoring of disease progression.

The facility is also designed to encourage collaboration between research groups. Neurodegenerative diseases are highly complex, and progress often requires scientists from different fields—including neuroscience, genetics, proteomics, data science and medicine—to work together.

Macquarie University's research program is also investigating how genetic mutations and environmental stress can influence proteins involved in MND. Understanding these interactions could help scientists determine why certain proteins become toxic and how they contribute to the loss of motor neurons.

The broader research program extends beyond motor neuron disease. The university's neurodegeneration research activities also include conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, frontotemporal dementia and Parkinson's disease.

Scientists caution that much of this research remains at an early stage, meaning that laboratory discoveries do not immediately translate into new treatments. Nevertheless, advanced facilities such as the National NeuroProteomics Infrastructure Facility can provide researchers with the tools needed to investigate these diseases more systematically.
